Portwest FC15 Compositelite Derwent Boots S1P (Black/Grey)

Most work safety boots have metal toecaps and midsoles, making them safe but unusable in metal-free zones. However, the Portwest FC15 Compositelite Derwent Boots S1P (Black/Grey) utilise fiberglass toecaps and anti-penetration midsoles for safety in places where metal cannot be used, such as high security zones, metal detection facilities, and a range of medical environments. Featuring superbly cushioned foot beds to reduce foot fatigue, these boots keep you comfortable and protected from the most common workplace hazards for support all day long wherever you are.

What Do These Standards Mean?

EN Standards can be difficult to understand, especially if you're not within the industry. For more information on these shoes and what these safety standards mean, keep reading the information below. For a more detailed breakdown of EN standards, including specific variations and codes, check out our handy guide to EN standards for footwear.

These safety boots have the EN safety standard rating: EN ISO 20345: 2011 S1P. Let's break down what this means:

  • EN ISO 20345 2011: This is the overarching standard at which the safety requirements needed for all work footwear are met. This standard is then divided into several different classes which are rated and determined from a series of risk assessments that are conducted for different parts of the footwear.
  • S1: This is the subcategory of the EN ISO 20345: 2011 rating mentioned above. 'S1' means that this footwear has protective toecaps, fully closed heels with energy absorption, antistatic properties and resistance to fuel oil.
  • P: This stands for 'Penetration Resistance'. This means these boots prevent foot injury caused by punctures.

What Other Shoes of the Same Standard Are Available?

We have a huge range of S1P Safety Footwear available, with a variety of styles and designs to choose from. We also have a variety of S1P Safety Shoes, S1P Safety Trainers and S1P Safety Boots perfect for lightweight yet robust hazard protection. Where Else Can These Safety Boots Be Worn?

Safety boots are designed to provide protection to the feet in various hazardous work environments. They are typically worn in industries or occupations where there is a risk of foot injuries from falling objects, sharp objects, electrical hazards, slippery surfaces, or other potential workplace hazards. Here are some common areas where safety boots are worn:

  • Construction Sites: Safety boots are essential in construction sites where workers are exposed to falling objects, heavy machinery, uneven terrain, and other construction-related hazards.
  • Manufacturing and Industrial Facilities: Workers in manufacturing and industrial facilities, including factories, warehouses, and production lines, often wear safety boots to protect against potential foot injuries from heavy equipment, moving parts, falling objects, and industrial hazards.
  • Warehouses and Logistics: In warehouses and logistics environments, where materials handling, loading and unloading, and storage activities take place, safety boots are worn to protect against foot injuries from heavy objects, pallets, forklifts, and potential slips and falls.
  • Mining and Extraction: Mining operations involve rugged terrains, heavy machinery, and various hazards such as falling rocks, sharp objects, and chemical exposure. Safety boots are crucial for miners to protect their feet in such challenging environments.
  • Oil and Gas Industry: Workers in the oil and gas industry, including drilling, refining, and pipeline operations, face a range of hazards such as heavy equipment, slippery surfaces, chemical exposure, and potential impact injuries. Safety boots are worn to mitigate these risks.
  • Electrical and Utility Work: Electricians, lineworkers, and utility workers who deal with electrical systems and power distribution wear safety boots that provide electrical hazard protection. These boots are designed to prevent electrical shocks and withstand high voltage.
  • Emergency Services: Firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency service personnel often wear safety boots as part of their protective gear to ensure foot safety during rescue operations and hazardous incidents.

Why Should I Wear Metal-Free Shoes?

Metal-free shoes, also known as non-metallic shoes, are required in certain work environments for several reasons:

  • Security and Safety Checks: In some high-security areas, such as airports, government facilities, or certain industrial sites, metal detectors or X-ray machines are used for security checks. Metal-free shoes are necessary to pass through these security checkpoints without triggering alarms or requiring additional screening. This helps to streamline the security process and maintain efficient operations.
  • Electrical Hazard Protection: Metal components in footwear can conduct electricity, which can pose a risk in electrical work environments. Metal-free shoes eliminate the risk of electrical conductivity, reducing the potential for electric shocks or electrical accidents. These shoes are often made with non-conductive materials like composite toe caps or fiberglass shanks.
  • Non-Magnetic Environments: In some industries or research settings, non-magnetic conditions are essential, such as in medical imaging facilities (MRI rooms) or laboratories working with sensitive magnetic equipment. Metal-free shoes are necessary to prevent interference with sensitive instruments and maintain the integrity of test results or imaging equipment.
  • Lightweight and Comfort: Metal-free shoes are typically lighter in weight compared to shoes with metal components. This can provide increased comfort and reduce fatigue for workers who need to be on their feet for extended periods. Additionally, non-metallic footwear often offers better flexibility and improved ergonomic design.
  • Heat and Cold Insulation: Metal-free shoes may offer better insulation against temperature extremes. Metal components can transfer heat or cold, potentially causing discomfort or temperature-related injuries. Non-metallic shoes can provide better thermal insulation, keeping the feet more comfortable in hot or cold environments.

Why Are Toecaps and Midsoles Important?

Toecaps and midsoles play an essential part in foot protection. This is for the following reasons:

  • Toecaps: These are located in the toe section of many safety boots. They are necessary for the following reasons:
    • They ensure compliance with the relevant safety rules and regulations
    • They prevent foot fatigue for enhanced comfort of the wearer
    • They protect against 200 joules of pressure (for protection against falling objects)
    • They prevent injury caused by compression, (for example between hard surfaces or machinery)
    • They prevent puncture and piercing injuries (for example caused by stepping on nails or other sharp objects)
  • Midsoles: These are located in the sole area of the foot. These are necessary for the following reasons:
    • They ensure compliance with the relevant safety rules and regulations
    • They prevent foot fatigue for enhanced comfort of the wearer
    • They prevent puncture and piercing injuries (for example caused by stepping on nails or other sharp objects)
